Another Bridge Moon

Early

"Another Bridge" Sunday 2nd December 2007
"Moon" Wednesday 29th August 2007
"Early" Thursday 2nd August 2007
Another bridge today. This is the Westgate Bridge which runs over the entrance to the Yarra, allowing the Eastern and Western suburbs to meet. Container ships pass under here regularly in and out of the ports of Melbourne. They pass by Williamstown on their way out to the ocean.
Just before the lunar eclipse last night, here is the moon above the Westagate Bridge. Unfortunately clouds later spoilt much of the vision for the lunar eclipse from Melbourne, other states fairing much better.
Looking North East from Williamstown to the city skyline, early morning.
Telstra Dome
Fed Square

The G

"The G" Wednesday 13th June 2007
Another sporting stadium shot from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88, this one is the Telstra Dome, home of Friday night footy. In fact I'm off there tonight to watch the almighty Hawks beat Carlton in this weeks round of AFL. See those big white chopsticks in the background? Well not many people are aware, but Melbourne is soon to get it's own version of London's big Eye. This is separate to the temproary Big Sky wheel which I have shown here and here. This new Southern Star observation wheel is going to have 21 enclosed cabins and will be approx 120 metres off the ground. It is due to open before the end of next year. More information on this new attraction can be found here at the waterfront city website. UPDATE : Did I say Hawthorn would beat Carlton, sorry, I meant to say THRASH! Final score Hawthorn 180, Carlton 80.
More from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. Here I have shown Federation Square in the centre of the city. The modern architecture was much debated about, especially in consideration on it's close proximity to St Pauls cathedral and the Forum theatre which I have shown here on my 'buildings' page. But now after several years the square is always busy and has become a great meeting place. Notice the circle of people surrounding a street performer.
More from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. Today I have zoomed in on the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG or simply, 'the G'). Every week during the Australian Football League (AFL) season several weekly matches are played here, as are many other major sporting events. Melbourne is indeed the home of Australian sport, just yesterday it was strengthened with the new teamelbourne website. In the distance of this shot are firstly the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and then the Dandenong Ranges (known as the Dandenongs). These ranges are great for day trips from Melbourne with many interesting shops and cafes hidden amongst the great ferns and trees. More information about the dandenongs can be found here.

"Night Sky" Saturday 9th June 2007
As Promised here is my first shot from the new Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. In fact it is the opposite shot from yesterday, showing the Giant Sky Wheel where I took yesterdays shot from! Also in this shot is the Circus OZ tent, they are appearing in Melbourne between the 20th June and the 15th July 2007. I saw them perform in the same spot here at Birrarung Marr parklands two years ago and I highly recommend the show. Full details can be found at their own website here. Behind the wheel you can just make out the Federation Bells sculpture (also shown here at my 'sculpture and art' page). More from the edge tomorrow.
I've shown you the temporary 'Giant Sky Wheel' here on my 'events' page and here on my 'Landscapes' page, but today is the view from the top. This last weekend in Melbourne has been a long weekend with today being a holiday. I have spent the weekend like a tourist, staying in a city hotel and eating food every few minutes! On Saturday I rode this Giant sky wheel with my kids as the sun was about to set. On the Sunday I went up the Eureka tower to the new observation deck and also in 'the edge'. I will show you some photos from within the tower over the next few days. You can see the Eureka tower in todays shot (the tallest building), and also here, where I have shown an arrow displaying 'The edge'. My 'Buildings' page post of the 15th May 2007 has the information on this wonderful new attraction to Melbourne.

"Two Hundred Photos!" Wednesday 16th May 2007

Looking away from the City towards the East. You can see the Yarra, the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), part of Federation Square, the Rod Laver Arena, and off in the distance, the Dandenong Ranges. The spire in the foreground is on top of Flinders Street Station.
Under the Altona pier, early Saturday morning in the crisp new light of the day.
Today marks my 200th Post here at this current address. I started with two other blogspot addresses, but quickly moved over to my own domain shortly after. I have enjoyed posting my photos and hope yopu enjoy looking at them regularly. Certainly my visitor numbers have incresed greatly since those humble beginnings. I particularly enjoy the work of all the other daily photobloggers who you can find here. Thanks, and here's to another 200 shots from this fabulous city of Melbourne, Australia!

Festive City
"Florence On the Yarra" Sunday 13th May 2007
"River reflections" Saturday 28th April 2007
"Festive City" Monday 16th April 2007
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL! I spent yesterday with my mother celebrating on board "Florence on the Yarra", a restaurant ferry that drives down the Yarra river as you enjoy a nice meal or a simple cup of coffee. There is an indoor area, or on nice days like yesterday, you can sit comfortably upstairs and see the great views of inner city Melbourne.
Night reflections on the Yarra river passing through the city. The reflection shows the Victorian Arts Centre Spire, the boathouses and the Eureka tower, amongst other buildings.
The city is celebrating comedy at the moment with the Melbourne Comedy Festival drawing large crowds every year. Along the Yarra river are many temporary venues and as I have already mentioned, there is also this new 'giant sky wheel'. In the centre of the picture you can also see Deborah Halpern's "Angel" mosaic sculpture. I have a close up shot of this here from my Sculpture and art page, posting of 8th August 2006. This image has been submitted for the "Fuel my Blog - window' competeition.
St Kilda
Westgate Bridge

From Brighton

"Westgate Bridge" Wednesday 11th April 2007
"From Brighton" Thursday 22nd March 2007
From St Kilda beach across Port Phillip Bay.
Taken during the clear evening of last night. From Spotswood under the Westgate bridge to the city. This bridge links the city of Melbourne with the western suburbs. It is this high to allow containers ships easy access to the ports. You can see the container cranes under the bridge on the left.
Good enough to draw. The fanatastic view from Brighton looking back towards the city. On the right you can make out the bathing boxes. You can see a close up of one of the boxes at my 'Themes' page, posting date 12th August 2006.
